IEEE Artisanal Deep Sea Fishers SIGHT Orientation planned

The IEEE Artisanal Deep Sea Fishers SIGHT organizes a one day Orientation Programme, with the vision of encouraging Engineering Students and Faculties to involve with various small projects in Marine field.  It also aims to formulate small project teams by providing basic knowledge of the projects under the IEEE Artisanal Deep Sea Fishers SIGHT. It will enable them to accomplish the expected outcome efficiently.

Students, faculties and other interested people are invited to attend the programme. Need based technical and other support will also be given to them, but preferences will be given to the IEEE Members.

Speakers will include:

speakers

Shri Satish Babu and Dr. Priestly SHan

Project Orientation to Engineering students and other interested people

ADSGAF and SIFFS to hold consultation on safe boat design and boat building standards.

IEEE Artisanal Deep Sea Fishers, Association of Deep Sea Going Artisanal Fishermen and South Indian Federation of Fishermen jointly organize a Two Day Consultation on Safe Boat Design and Boat Building on FAO Standards. The consultation will be held on 29-30 July 2015 at KOODAL, Anna University Chennai Campus Chennai -6000025.

The purpose of the consultation is to bring out perfect boat designs and boat models to match the demand of Artisanal Deep Sea Fishers of Thoothoor region of Kanyakumari District. There are more than 600 boats of various sizes operating in the entire coast of India and also operating beyond the Indian limit. Many times their boats are fallen in to accidents and one of the reasons for the accident is poor boat design, dubious quality materials used for building boats, poor facilities in boat etc. In this backdrop we have proposed to have a consultation with the leading Naval Architects and Boat Builders, Progressive Deep Sea Fishermen Representatives, Representatives from Fishermen Organizations, Fisheries Technocrats, Experts, Engineers, Representatives from State fisheries Department etc.

See the linked file for more information: First Consultation on Safe Boat Design and Boat Building on FAO Standard

For those interested in attending, please fill out and return this registration form: First Consultation on SBDBB Registration form

ADSGAF purchases solar-powered refrigeration truck under NFDB program

Mohan, Deputy Director is handing over the key of new vehicle on 5th November 2014 in the presence of Mr. Rubert Jothi, Assistant Director, Department of Fisheries, Nagercoil Region to Mr. Romanse, the secretary, ADSGAF. Mr. Sam Micheal, Executive Member, Mr. Muthayyan, Treasurer, Mr. Shabu Arul, Admin and Accounts, ADSGAF, Mr. Thanu Moorthy, Kodai Automobiles and others are seen in the picture above.

The Association of Deep Sea Going Artisanal Fishermen (ADSGAF), purchased a new vehicle on 5th November 2014 under the National Fisheries Development Board (NFDB) Funded Project “Solar Powered Truck for the Transportation of Fresh Fish” through the Department of Fisheries, Government of Tamil Nadu. The objective of the Project is to undertake pilot-scale trials on the use of solar powered refrigerated system on a small commercial vehicle for transporting fresh fish.

Through this Project, the ADSGAF will try to demonstrate how the cost of transportation could be minimized and in the process also contribute to the reduction of carbon emission to the ambient environment. Large quantities of fresh fish were transported every day in the country and the demand has been increasing over the period, including the demand for refrigerated vehicles to transport fish in the best possible condition. Increasing cost of fuel and often restricted availability of quality ice is becoming a major problem, faced by both the fishermen and also the people who are engaged in the transportation business. If this Project is implemented successfully, the operational expenses of refrigerated transportation of fish will be reduced considerably and it will be a milestone in the utilization of solar energy in fisheries sector. Later the technology could also be replicated to other areas. The Project has been approved by the NFDB, based on a request sent to the Board by ADSGAF through the Department of Fisheries of the Government of Tamil Nadu. The BOBP-IGO is providing the advisory support to the Project.

Fishing boats become part of race to cut carbon

The Hindu newspaper this week published a feature that relates to ADSGAF’s work to install solar panels on fishing boats:

Fishing boats to reduce carbon footprint

Hundreds of deep sea going fishing boats operating from Kerala and Tamil Nadu will soon be key players in a global bid to cut carbon emissions.

The Association of Deep Sea Going Artisanal Fishermen (ADSGAF) has taken up a pilot project to equip fishing vessels with solar panels so as to save fuel on long voyages and reduce the carbon footprint.

The second boat under the NABARD-funded project was put out to sea from the Muttom harbour in Kanyakumary district on Sunday. The first vessel fitted with solar panels had begun operations from the Thoppumpadi harbour, Ernakulam, in May this year. The solar panels are used to charge the battery which powers the GPS navigation equipment, fish finder and two VHF sets for communication, as well as signals and other lights on board.

Fishermen’s fears

“At sea, fishermen keep the boat’s engine running continuously, fearing they will be stranded if it refuses to restart,” says Vincent Jain, Chief Executive, ADSGAF. “By partly switching over to solar energy, they save fuel while cutting down on carbon emission”.

The boats usually remain at sea for about 15 days. Trials carried out by ADSGAF proved that switching off the inboard engine for three hours could save 30 litres of fuel a day, translating into an annual saving of at least Rs.4,65,000 for a boat.

The second boat under the NABARD funded project is ready to go for fishing with solar equipments. The engineering team headed by Mr. Sadhishkumar of Jagath Jothi Solar Energy Pvt Ltd, Chennai spent 2 days for the installation work.

The boat was to go fishing for fishing from Sept 14 MOCHANAM owned by Lourdayyan will go for fishing from Muttom Harbour. We will send you more information of the fishing voyage of the boat later.
